With Prep for AZ, the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) is investing in a statewide initiative that helps schools prepare for what’s next by aligning people, practice and support around shared goals for teaching and learning.

Prep for AZ is a statewide initiative that ensures consistent practices, appropriate support and statewide resources are available to educators and districts across Arizona. When people, practice and support are aligned, schools are better prepared to deliver strong educational outcomes.

What Prep for AZ offers

Prep for AZ brings together three coordinated areas of support. District leaders can choose individual offerings or multiple options based on their budget and most urgent priorities.

Strengthening teacher capacity

High-quality professional learning enhances instruction and builds long-term capacity across Arizona’s educator workforce. Educators gain access to consistent guidance, shared problem-solving and professional connections, no matter where they teach.

Science of Reading literacy endorsement (K–5)

We develop Arizona’s early readers by providing comprehensive training that:

• Meets Arizona’s full K–5 literacy endorsement requirements, in compliance with statewide literacy law
• Reduces inequity and can reach educators statewide, regardless of district geography, in virtual or hybrid formats 
• Is facilitated by experienced literacy specialists
• Focuses on applying research-based reading instruction in the classroom
• Strengthens foundational reading instruction for early learners
• Builds long-term capacity for improved K–5 literacy outcomes

Ongoing coaching and collaborative learning for teachers (K–10)

Prep for AZ connects educators, primarily those who may be the only teacher in their subject or grade level, into supported learning communities.

• Regular, facilitated virtual meetings with peers and instructional experts
• Collaborative lesson planning and discussions about student work
• Coaching on effective, research-backed instructional strategies
• Practical support grounded in everyday classroom needs

• Supports fidelity of implementation of both the Science of Reading and high-quality math instruction
• Reduces professional isolation and burnout, particularly in rural settings

Math literacy supports for students

Preparing instruction and support
Targeted math support helps students strengthen foundational skills and stay on track for grade-level learning and Algebra readiness. By integrating additional support into the school day, instruction and intervention work together to offer students consistent, connected learning.

Math Momentum 2.0

This statewide math support program provides additional instruction during the school day for students who need it most in grades 3–10. This program provides:

• Trained, in-person math tutors who deliver high-dosage, research-backed tutoring during the school day 
• Instruction that meets Arizona standards and local classroom pacing
• Focused support that develops number sense and early algebra skills
• Reinforcement of classroom learning, building upon core instruction

Tutors are deployed based on math performance data—not staffing shortages—ensuring support reaches the schools and students who need it most.

Delivers AZ’s most effective math intervention model

High-dosage tutoring (30–45 minutes daily) shows the largest gains of any recovery strategy.

Builds sustained capacity in struggling schools

Tutors provide meaningful instructional lift, giving teachers more time for differentiation and planning.

Equity-focused statewide reach

Rural schools, where math outcomes are often lowest, receive high-quality support that otherwise may be difficult to access or staff.

Accelerates readiness for Algebra and beyond

Students strengthen foundational math skills needed to progress toward Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Calculus by senior year. This is also a pipeline for teachers.

Teacher shortage solutions and course access

Preparing for capacity and opportunity
Every student deserves access to essential coursework, regardless of where they live. Prep for AZ provides flexible options that help districts offer key courses even when staffing is limited.

Summer Bridge programs

Accelerated summer coursework and math readiness support help students strengthen skills or complete coursework. These programs also immediately fill gaps created by teacher shortages during the summer and ensure students are not held back academically due to local staffing limitations. They include:

• Math readiness pathways for Algebra I and Geometry
  • Improves math placement for freshmen and sophomores
  • Strengthens the statewide pipeline toward Calculus, engineering and STEM careers
• Opportunities for credit completion and academic preparation.
• Instruction delivered by Arizona-certified teachers.

School-year virtual course access

During the school year, students can enroll in select courses taught by highly qualified educators when those courses are not available locally. These virtual courses:

• Meet ABOR requirements in math, lab sciences and world languages
• Help students stay on track for graduation and university eligibility
• Work alongside existing school schedules and staffing

Prep for AZ is a statewide initiative available to all Arizona districts and schools.

Districts across the state can use Prep for AZ resources and support programs, regardless of size, location or current staffing model.

Some offerings may be prioritized or phased based on student needs, local context and statewide goals to ensure resources are directed where they can have the greatest impact.
